USA – Land Of Surprises – travel

The United States is a popular destination for vacationing among all. It is an amazing country that offers a variety of experiences. There are options for everyone, whether you are a backpacker or a luxury traveller. Before you start planning for your visit, make sure that you have a valid Visa.  If there are hitches in your visa, you can even be denied entry into the country. You must be well-versed with the new Visa Waiver procedure that was implemented in January 2009 for visiting the U.S. The new rules apply to countries that are included in the Visa Waiver Program. This program is eligible only for travellers who wish to stay in the U.S. for less than 90 days. For others, visa is available through normal channels. The ‘Electronic System for Travel Authorisation’ (ESTA) of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security applies to all countries that are eligible under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program.

United States of America is a country with 50 states and has a lot to offer to its tourists. There are a variety of beaches, theme parks, sceneries and museums. If you are fond of beaches, you can visit Miami, Florida, Hawaii, and others. For golfers, Orlando is the place to go. Las Vegas is a place for you if you love an active night life. If you are visiting US, then you cannot miss the spectacular Niagara Falls.

The US is a store house of tourist attractions. Starting from the elegant White House, to Cape Canaveral, to Kennedy Space Center, to Hollywood, to the Statue of Liberty to Disneyland – you name it, you have it. A very popular destination is the New York City. People visit the city for the dazzling Times Square and the Broadway theatres. The other attractions in New York include the Empire State Building, Wall Street, and the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. The city of San Francisco is known for its Urban park, the Golden Gate Park, the Transamerica Pyramid, Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art just to name a few. LA offers Disneyland, Hollywood and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

The most happening New Year’s Eve celebrations happen at the Times Square in New York City and on the Strip in Las Vegas. If you wish to attend these events, you need to book hotels much in advance. While booking the hotels, make sure that you negotiate a good deal. Some give complimentary breakfasts. Some provide free shuttle service.  Just make sure that you have survey all options before taking the final decision. Fast food is available all over the US. And it is quite cheap. Apart from that, there are convenience stores open 24/7 selling groceries and other food items. Food courts in shopping malls are a good option too. If you are a big eater, then you get All You Can Eat Buffets that serve you a lot of food at nominal prices.

  1. Well I know that a lot of tourists are annoying (we have some here) and yes you may meet some of the more annoying Americans, but the majority will be like the lovely ones you've met.

I have noticed that people in the UK are more reserved than we are. I mean like not as emotional, like we may hug someone that we have just met depending on the circumstances and the individual. When we do hug it is to make you feel welcome, not to be forward.

As for black Americans finding the word black offensive, It really depends on the person. Some want to be called African American and others don't mind being called black. I don't mind people calling me black as long as they don't call me the N word. So to be on the safe side you can always ask what they want to be called.

As for us thinking that all Irish are drunks, remember that we are exposed to stereotypes just like you are exposed to ones about us. However just because the TV shows that doesn't mean we believe it: when I hear of an Irish person I think of someone with an Irish accent, not beer.

Not all of us think that we have the greatest country in the world; I don't believe that there is one. All countries have pros and cons and we are not exempt. Of course if you star pointing out all of our short comings (which I doubt you will) then be prepared for a fight.

If you do bump into someone just say excuse me because it is considered rude over here (every country has certain things that are consider rude while other countries may not think so). While no one will chase after you if you don't say excuse me, they will think of you as a rude person.

On the topic of food, if you do go to a fast food restaurant just order a smaller size or one equal to large in your country. You can always try regular restaurants, because not all serve fast food, and if you’re a vegetarian try Fresh Choice.

If you’re at someone's house and if you do not finish all of the food on your plate they will so not get offended, they will just think that you're full. Anyways if you do over eat and get sick then everyone will want to know why you ate too much lol :)

People will understand you. Every now and then you may use a word or phrase that we may not know so they will ask you what you mean. By now most Americans know that chips mean fries, so if you say chips they will ask if you mean our chips or fries. If your ordering in a restaurant say fries just in case. Oh yeah, I heard that there are some great fish and chip restaurants in New York, so if your going there see if you can find any if you like them.

I don't know why some people would call you dumb for speaking your way (the UK way). Anyone with sense would be able to tell that you’re from another country. So I would call them "Dumb in America". Speak how you want.

Finally I don't know anyone who believes in leprechauns; unless they are into mythology.

I hoped this helped some. Have fun on your trip! :)
